"Creating Art & Music" is an introductory course designed to introduce creative activities in the context of art and music. Thus far the course has been taught at the middle school, high school, community college, and university level (with appropriate adaptations for each level). Each week this fall, students in the course are posting their projects in this strand of the Snap! forum. Here's a link to the course materials:
This week's module is titled "Musical Notes & Scales". A scale is a simple way to organize musical notes that sound pleasing when played in sequence. For example, The most common scale, like the "do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do" from The Sound of Music, is called a major scale. In this module, we will explore three different scales commonly found in Western music. We will build off of the last modules discussion to show how scales can be used to create more complex chords and then discuss methods of constructing melodies that match the chord progression you created in the last module.
For your assignment this week, we would like you to build a melody to match your chords from last week's assignment. The melody should be playable using the Play Tracks block. (Remember: The block works best if the melody is the first track entered.) If you're feeling ambitions, feel free to also create a harmony or a bass track.
Hi! This is my chords progression with the melody. I aimed to create a "lullaby" style scale and I also added multiple background melodies such as the cello and the organ to better go along:
Hi I liked the flow of the melody that resonates with the chords you created, especially towards the end! I would love to see how you elaborate on this piece in the future! I think a suggestion would be to place the melody tracks first so when later you add more stuff to it, it will sync better.
I realized how my chords progression from last week would be difficult to have with a melody, so I tried to change that. Last week, my chords had an uplifting vibe to it which made it difficult to add a melody on top. I used the melody that I made on La vie en rose on top of some chord progressions. I am not musically inclined, so I am unsure if this meshes well together. Snap! Build Your Own Blocks
Here is my track with the melody. I wanted to make sure my melody was interesting so I switched up the note durations quite a bit. I will probably continue to play around with some of the bass measures and also the volume of certain instruments.
Here is my chord progression with a melody: Chords & Melody. Similar to my chord progression I stepped up in notes in my melody to attempt to make the melody fit well with the chords. I would like to continue to play around with the melody to make it feel more unique and possibly consider different instruments as well.
Here is my chord progression and melody project. I tried to make the melody mesh well with the chord progression however I am not too sure how to incorporate different key changes into it and I would like to play around more with that and adding more instruments. Snap! Build Your Own Blocks
Here is my melody project, I realized writing a melody is much more difficult than I thought. I used the same piano chords from the last assignment, but added two instruments to provide the higher and lower notes, hence the flute and tuba.
Because I got in a hurry when I was making the post and didn't update the module number. Good catch. Notes and Scales should be Module 8. I corrected the thread title.
Here is my updated project: Chords & Melody. For this version I changed one melody to half notes to better match with my chords. Additionally, I changed the instrument to a flute as it sounds better at higher octaves.
This is great! I love how whimsical and fun the melody is. Also like how you used two different melody tracks, each with a different instrument, to capture a larger range of notes. The code is also well organized. Great job!
