Art & Music - Module 1 (Spring 2025)

"Creating Art & Music" is an introductory course designed to introduce creative activities in the context of art and music. Thus far the course has been taught at the middle school, high school, community college, and university level (with appropriate adaptations for each level). Each week this fall, students in the course are posting their projects in this strand of the Snap! forum. Here's a link to the course materials:

Art, Animations & Music

This week's module is titled "Creating Artistic Patterns through Computer Graphics":

https://maketolearn.org/creating-art-animations-and-music/artistic-patterns/

The first assignment is being undertaken in collaboration with teachers and students in Kisumu, Kenya. The goal of the assignment is to reproduce an Adrinka symbol using Snap*!*.

You can read more about Adrinka symbols on Wikipedia.

Once you have created your design using Turtle Graphics in Snap*!, load the Snap!* Embroidery Library. The Snap*!* Embroidery Library is designed to enable Snap*!* users to reproduce a design using a computer-controlled embroidery machine such as the Brother SE700 or the Brother M370. Here is an example of a pillow created using this fabrication tool. (Thanks to Elaine Wolfe for creating the pillow.)

Use the stitch blocks from the Embroidery Library to create a stitching pattern for your Adrinka symbol.

Save your program to the cloud, share it so that others will be able to access it, and then post the link as a reply in this strand.

If you need additional inspiration, a link to the previous semester's forum post is below. Feel free to browse other people's projects. If you borrow any code from them, be sure to reference their project in your program notes.

Hi, I'm making a variation of 8 and 43.

Snap! Build Your Own Blocks My square design using multiple loops!

Hi! Here is the link to my Adrinkra symbol pattern project for Week 1. My goal was to play with lines and colors to design my own Adrinkra-like octagon pattern with a larger octagon border surrounding it.

Hi! My design was inspired by the diamond shapes but with a spiral twist! Snap! Build Your Own Blocks

I attempted to replicate the Andinkra design with semicircles with my program.

I was broadly aiming to replicate some of the circular Adinkra symbols, though not one in particular! Link:

Hi! I tried making a variation of #15, Ananse Ntontan.

Hi, I started with an altered version of #4 and wanted to do a similar design as #49 with a gradient color.

Hi! I was inspired by some of the circular images and wanted to incorporate that in my symbol.

Hi! I am attempting to recreate the Adinkra Nkyimu. I am currently trying to figure out how to use the same coding as I used for the right lines to make the left lines, but it is a little off so far.

Hi, I decided to make my own design inspired by symmetry and repetition. I wanted to play around with arcs and the repeating shapes to form symmetric patterns, as well as color to highlight different parts of the patterns. Link to my project [here]. (Snap! Build Your Own Blocks)

Hello, this is my pattern using repeating square and tear shapes. I was inspired by some of the Adinkra designs that used repeating circular/tear shapes, but eventually settled on basing my pattern off a rose. Link here

Hi @dylanndo,

Maybe you could edit your blocks with a clear beginning and end. I had to search which blocks I should click to get the effect you made. You didn't, for instance, use a when green flag is clicked block. I like the effect I got but couldn't get the circle/spring effect on the left of the screen.

Hi @auj9rz,

I like the effect. Would it be possible for you to change the code so that the effect in the middle square, the 4 tiny boxes, would also happen in the other boxes?

Hi @meganlife,

I really like your use of color. The end effect is really nice looking at the center. You could imagine a flower or diamond shape being visible.

Hi @tuyendang,

I really liked the thick lines. Personally the white circles pattern wouldn't have been necessary, but that is just a matter of taste.

Hi @ekim1211,

Those semicircles with the single color are really powerfull. You have no starting block in your code so pressing the green flag doesn't do anything. Maybe you could add that.

Hi @cur4af,

I really had to be patient for your symbol to be drawn on the screen  The instant fill effect was surprising since the rest went slow.

Hi @julia.tan,

I really liked your choice. Also the single blue color was nice. You also didn't have a when green flag clicked block. Adding that block makes it very easy to start it.
