Ah, it’s not allowed at all… I just checked
Sigh, this issue keeps coming back to bite me… (The general issue, I mean, about what is and isn’t allowed here, not this specific project.) Our published rules are inconsistent, I confess, partly because they change with the wind, and I think partly because we the staff aren’t of one mind about it.
The general principle that I want to uphold is that the site should be PG-13. This is consistent with the idea that our main target audience is 12-22 years old. Nevertheless, I’m aware, as we all are aware, that we do get the occasional eight-year-old here, and I don’t want to chase them away! Once in a blue moon we get an actual complaint from an actual eight-year-old, and I think once we got a complaint from the parent of an eight-year-old, although there’s some internal evidence in that complaint that it was fabricated by a political advocacy group and written by someone who’d never actually visited the site.
I’m sort of a free speech extremist. I also think, as a student of developmental psychology, that adolescence is the time to try out socially unacceptable stances. At one time it was fashionable in rock & roll circles to wear swastikas, and although I found that personally distasteful, I was aware that causing that reaction in adults such as (sigh) me was the whole idea, and I wasn’t inclined to punish teens who did it. It’s important to me to tolerate ideas that I disagree with, and I think it should be allowed, for example, to argue dispassionately that “____ people are genetically inferior” (fill the blank with your least favorite ethnic minority). By contrast, “You, ____, as a member of the ____ people, are inferior” is hate speech and shouldn’t be allowed (here or anywhere). And certainly “let’s go kill some ____ people” would be way out of line.
I know I’m way out on the edge here, and I’m quite sure that some other staff members would delete even dispassionate racist arguments at a glance.
To be clear, my instincts don’t always agree with my principles. Every time I watch Casablanca, the greatest movie ever made, when I get to the scene in which Ilsa Lund (aargh Ilsa I hate sans serif) says “That boy playing the piano…” referring to an adult Black character, I want to crawl under the table and hide. (That line is the only racist thing in the otherwise politically admirable movie.) But I don’t think people should stop watching Casablanca because of it, or stop showing it to their kids, and certainly people shouldn’t remove it from libraries and so on. I would, in fact, feel icky in a different way were I to watch a version in which that line was edited out.
Okay, so, getting down to the present case. This forum topic was flagged and I have rejected the flag, because there’s nothing objectionable in the topic itself. As for the underlying project, its start screen has a
︎ icon which, when clicked, gives a warning about violence in the game. I suppose I’d be a little happier if the warning itself were on the start screen.
Also, context matters. If Snap! were inundated with violent games, so that clicking a random link would be likely to find one, I suppose I’d be less tolerant. But even this particular user’s published projects aren’t mainly violent games, let alone the entire site.
