Is it bugged, or did I miss an update?
Do you use flat mode?
I think they've always been square? (IDK)

And I don’t think they had a choice as to wether or not to update either
No, we did, but along with formatting changes like this, there are often security updates, so it's not a good idea to get too far behind.
It was caused by an update, okay.
Was the square change intentional, though?
I'm not complaining too much, although it was easier for me to read the rectangles, it possibly could have been easier for some other people too.

Honestly, I suspect this has more to do with what you're accustomed to than with any inherent ease or difficulty. For example, in the category selector
you don't have any trouble reading the seven categories that aren't the selected one. :~)

While you could have stayed on the older version it would have been a horrible idea because of this Almosr forcing you to update
Technically they did have a choice. They could go in and modify some css to make the squares go back to rectangles being a background for the category text.
I didn’t even take that into concideraation whoops
