when I make a block the arrow to block variables doesn't show so I can't block variables, what is the problem?
Step 1
Right-click on the lighter area above the actual block definition to get this menu
Step 2
Select block variables
Step 3
Click on arrow
Step 4
Click on variable to change its name

Just saying, block variables are variables that retain their value every time that specific instance of the block is ran. If you are not creating a block that utilizes this, then you may want to use script variables instead.
It's "lighter" only if the block is in the Controls category. Otherwise the hat is in the regular old Controls color.
