I think it may be theme specific, because I'm currently using the dark theme and I have circle profile pictures.

I have light theme, and pfp's are circular.
Snap! Style (the one I am using) still has circular profile pictures, so does Air, Discourse Dark, and the broken dark theme where UI elements are light so is text.
It's Sam's Simple Theme that switched to square profile pictures.
