I mean, bread is also pretty big in america, in fact, it's big all over the entire world (then again, it has a very very long history).

Well, they're dough-based. Do you consider muffins bread? Cupcakes? I think pretzels are more like those things (in purpose, not in ingredient list) than like regular bread.
If by "sandwich bread" you mean the stuff that comes in plastic bags in the supermarket, yuck. (I was amused, when I lived in Paris for a while, that even the French have supermarket bread, and, amazingly, it's way yuckier even than American plastic bread. I can't imagine who buys it, except I guess each American visitor, once, just out of curiosity.)
But sandwiches are a noble purpose for bread, and there exists great bread for sandwiches. I use Acme pain au levain. If the sandwich meat is smoked fish, of course, bagels, from a real bagel bakery, not plastic supermarket bagels.

I don't think Blog is a good place for this. I happen to be a developer, but this is a random side discussion, not an announcement from the team.
We used to have a category for random side discussions, and then that got seriously abused, and so we outlawed side discussions, but right know, knock on wood, we seem to be past that, and I don't think the occasional digression is so horrible. Makes the forum more fun.

lemme take this off topic quickly once more, because Pretzels are important to me:
There are lots of different kinds pretzels around - especially Southern - Germany, most of them treated with lye before they're baked. The original Swabian "Brezel" (notice the "B" and no "t") is actually soft and salted - and you eat it with butter not with mustard - not thin and crunchy as in Bavarian beer halls. BUT the kind of pretzel I'm alluding to in the santa hat block is the delicious "Weihnachtsbrezel" (Christmas Pretzel), which is more like a yeast plait, a big, soft and sweet holiday specialty (without lye):

I do wish you made ones themed around drinks (glüwein, eggnog, hot chocolate, etc.), but the pretzel makes up for it!
