“Insecure website”

When trying to log into snap. Or just open up the link in general, I got an error message that’s similar to this:

*(Random image from the internet showing my error)*

I just thought it would be nice to report this and get insight on this.

This does happen every once in a while.

This does happen every once in a while.

Me too.

You mean “연결이 비공개로 설정되어 있지 않음” or something else

It works just fine for me:

It’s now also back for me, I guess you checked at a better time.

Does happen to me (im on a school device most if my coding time anyway) when im on my computer I just turn off the security setting just for snap. Wish i can do that for my school device but we have GoGardian :expressionless_face:

DON’T LOG INTO THE SITE WHILE THAT’S OFF! What the warning tells you is that all your traffic is unencrypted, meaning everything that you do in the site can be seen by an attacker. This means that if you send your password to log in, an attacker can see that.

Oh never mind then ill turn it right back on!

I DESPISE GoGuardian.

Sorry! The automated certificate renewal isn’t working right. :frowning: It was broken for about an hour this time.

If this does happen again, it’s generally safe, if you trust us, to to still log into. There’s a way bigger chance I screwed up than we got hacked… that said! It is good practice to proceed with caution when these things happen for any website.

Anyway what works for me on my school device is close the tab and re open the snap website

[1] @redgeographysnap Yea same it blocks a lot of websites even if im trying to research something about school. It’s like whoever made this never heard of the word “fun”… I can type a bunch more of why i don’t like GoGardian but I’ll save your time. (I could not say ill save your ears becuse you will be reading this lol)

  1. regarding GoGardian ↩︎

Oh yea thats what it says for me it says something like “The certificate isn’t valid anymore” or something like that.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

An invalid/expired security certificate doesn’t mean the website got hacked, it means that you can only visit it with http:// security. The reason why https exists is to encrypt traffic so people can’t see what people have sent to the server. Without this protection, anyone can see what you send to Snap! (including your passwords)

This is partially correct, or at least depends on the site.

In the case of snap, with the exception of a couple of pages we explicitly disallow plain http calls. So, if the cert expires your only option is to bypass it.

that said,‘in the case of expiration specifically — the site is still secure. Browsers fail the check because overtime, an expired cert is potentially more likely compromised (and if expiration were ignored wholesale by browsers, people like me might not refresh them as quickly since it is annoying.)

The problem though is there are many other reasons a cert can show as invalid in the browser — like names not completely matching. Again, this might not mean things are insecure but there is a greater chance in this case that the server has been compromised and the cert replaced with someone else’s. Probably not, but a chance.

Most people genuinely shouldn’t need to learn all the tiny details so it’s easiest to say wait until it’s fixed or proceed with caution.

Anyway, I do think after spending an hour looking at things I’ve gotten a better fix this time so hopefully this does not happen again!

Thanks for fixing!

Off topic! Did you mean: "연결이 비공개로 설정되어 있지 않음"?If you mean something else, I'm sorry.

As someone who doesn’t speak korean, I am struggling to understand what this means in the context of your post even after translating it.

Okay just got this error this is the one I’ve been getting.

There’s a problem with your DNS. Try clearing your cache. It’s typically not the website’s fault if it’s configured correctly.
