How to understand the base case of a recursion

Recursive algorithms are really easy to write and understand once you get the principle.

I'm 63 years old - been trying to write them off and on for 45 years - still really struggle.

It's on the same cognitive level as trying to imagine viewing a 4D object in 3D space
