Well then why are they called woodchucks if they can't chuck wood?
i remember reading somewhere that the word comes from some other language, where it was something like "ocek" (with at least one diacritic i don't remember) and english speakers hearing it thought it was "woodchuck"
Etymology
Borrowed from Cree ocêk, otchek (“fisher”), borrowed from Ojibwe ojiig (“fisher, marten”), or a similar term in a related Algonquian language, subsequently reapplied to the groundhog.
An earlier form of this word, woodshock, still sometimes designates the marten. Also a doublet of wejack.
