For another, people who don't know any better display the Facebook like button on their web sites, and if you visit that site, Facebook collects that information about you even if you don't click the button. So they build a dossier about the interests of everyone in the world. Their purpose for collecting the information is to show you targeted advertising, but once the dossier is there, it's used for all kinds of nefarious political purposes.
